Day 1 | Day 2

The following links provides useful information on learning preferences and the use of distance learning technology in communicating with people in one's environment. Much of the technical information in this presentation came from the sites below:

AGENDA - Day 1

Call 1 (60 minutes) - At the end of this call, you should be able to choose simple ways to convey ideas effectively to people with a variety of learning preferences, through common distance education techniques.

What is Intelligence? A discussion of multiple intelligences (Gardner,1991) and Canfield's Test

Activity: You want to communicate a concept/message to someone in a traditional way (linguistic/rational/mathematic/linear). Choose two other ways to communicate that concept or message to people with a visual-spacial and musical intelligence.

ACTIVITY:  Select an objective/item that you have difficulty conveying to people in your environment (distances, complexity of the concept). By using DE technology and multimedia, design a simple plan to reach people in a more effective way. Use the multiple intelligences list as a checklist and also think of the availability of distance learning options as an advantage. Report on what strategies you used. This shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. Evaluate whether the methodology you designed would be worth the effort.

AGENDA – Day 2

Call 2 (60 minutes) - At the end of this call, you should be totally confused and ready to experiment with some of your most intriguing DE technology yourself.

Conferencing Options

Audio Conference

A widely used distance learning technology that brings individuals and groups together via telephone connections for audio interaction.  A form of teleconferencing in real time using both an audio and a data connection.

Computer (Internet) Conference

Conferences using a worldwide network of computers comprised of many smaller networks that are all interlinked.

Audiographics Conference

A distance education application which uses a combination of telephone and computer technology.  Telephone connections provide voice interactions while computers allow for the sharing of visuals and collaborative work. The computer screen is shared by more than one site, and used as an electronic blackboard, overhead projector or still video projector. Some systems allow for sharing software also.

 Video Teleconference

Often referred to as compressed video or two-way video. An Interactive video conference between 2 or more locations with live, animated image transmission and display.

Limitations

Tech Tips

Costs are based on bandwidth used, time of day, distance called and the telecommunications provider you use. Low bandwidth (112K or 128K) costs $10-$25 per hour, per location. Full T may range from $55-$125 per hour.

Teaching Tips

Stay away from the "talking head!" Change Use the full advantage of some of the best that technology has to offer. Use videos, the document camera, other students, the computer, yourself, everything you can to keep the participant's attention on the screen. Talking heads talk, talk, talk. Thinking heads take advantage of every opportunity to use variety in sound, sight and touch.

Satellite Conferencing

One way videoconferencing from an origination site (uplink) to multiple receive sites (downlinks).  Satellite programs are best used in programming in which seeing the participants is not important to the program content or message.

Characteristics: Receive sites interact during the conference via phone or fax.

Combinations

Combinations of media and approaches will best reach the greatest numbers of participants. A checklist with multiple intelligences listed can best give you a picture of how likely you are to reach people of different intelligences and learning styles.

If you cannot easily mix the media in one session, provide the same information in different forms so that participants can get the message in their own way.

Final Reminders

Where from Here?

Final comments and discussion on the use of technology in your environments.
