To
develop a good lesson plan, think first about the following:
1.
What do my students most want right now? What do they need right
now? Write it down, even if you repeat it every time!
Sample
statements of wants/needs for different students:
2.
What can I expect them to be able to do by the end of the session
that they haven’t been able to do before? Include not only content
outcomes, but social, emotional, and other dimensions of learning and
interacting. These are your objectives for the session. State them in
student terms, not teacher goals.
Sample
statements of session objectives for different students:
-
To multiply 10 figures by two digits in
five minutes or less
-
To solve a word problem in a group in
three minutes or less
-
To take the role of a doctor in
informing a patient about the interaction of four drugs
-
Argue a position on two issues relating
to peer pressure in Junior High
-
To type a short paragraph with less than
5 errors in …. minutes.
-
To summarize the duties and
accomplishment of a former job in a short paragraph
3.
How do the outcomes for this session help my students to reach
their goals for joining this program?
Sample statements of synchronicity
with goals:
-
Goal: To get an entry level
job by the end of the year.
-
Objective: summarize job
duties; work on a team to solve a problem
============================
-
Goal: To
advance to Level II in math
-
Objective:
multiply numbers by two digits; solve a word problem
============================
-
Goal: To
help my family and become a good role model
-
Objective:
Take the role of a doctor; argue a position on teen issues
4.
What can I do to help my students achieve their objectives in this
session? How can I naturally incorporate different learning intelligences
and styles in this session? How can I reach students from other
cultures?
-
Add rhythm to math memorization (music-rhythm)
-
Play a video of a patient/doctor session (visual, hearing)
-
Go to the Internet and study several samples of good resumes at the
six-grade reading level (visual, intra-active)
-
Play charades around job activities (active, kinesthetic,
interpersonal)
-
Go to the Internet and have students observe a space site and
summarize their findings. (linguistic, natural)
-
Plan a garden and have students predict the harvest by multiplying
the number of expected produce from the number of plants (natural,
intrapersonal)
-
Let students observe two teen-agers interacting and comment on the
observation (Native American style)
5. How will I know that students have achieved their objectives? Include
quizzes, performance rubrics, have students self-evaluate their outcomes.
Keep records.
6.
Develop a plan that includes the above elements.
7. Complete a rubric after the lesson to evaluate the lesson’s
effectiveness in reaching the objectives.
After you go thorough this process a few times, it will become second
nature, and you will have instant accountability for your classes.
