Purpose: To introduce students of any age to the process of self-discovery

 

Objectives: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to…

 

1.     Life-Skill: Identify four parts of their own nature or behavior.

2.     Technical Skill/Job Skill: Create and present a simple Power Point presentation

3.     Academic Skill: read a biography and outline aspects of a person’s life; summarize a story; write a short autobiography covering four aspects of one’s life.

4.     Social Skill/Job Skill: Brainstorm ideas in a group; share information in a group; help another develop the project.

 

Time: Six to eight hours

 

Teaching Activity

 

Content Development

 

1.     Select the biography or a fictional story of a person to whom most students are likely to relate.

2.     Briefly tell that person’s story.

3.     Have students read the story.

4.     Brainstorm aspects of that person’s life: what do students relate to in what they learned?

5.     Develop a “map” of that person’s life showing different aspects covered in the narration (personal, work, recreation, hobbies, contributions, funny incidents, etc…)

6.     Show a Power Point presentation with six-slides (title, content and conclusion) graphically showing (collages, animation, etc…) four aspects of that person’s life.

 

Technical Skill Development

 

1.     Introduce Power Point and its features.

2.     Teach students to apply graphics and text in Power Point.

3.     Develop a simple three-page presentation with them (title, content page and end), in which the following steps are covered in relation to the project:

v     Open Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.

 

v     Create a new presentation using a template .

 

v     Navigate the menu bars.

 

v     Navigate different views – combo, outline, slide, notes, slide sorter.

 

v     Show and apply different layouts.

 

v     Insert clip art from gallery.

 

v     Format text in placeholders.

 

v     Format pictures.

 

v     Copy and paste.

 

v     Group and ungroup objects.

 

v     Insert text in a placeholder.

 

v     Insert shapes and place text or images in them.

 

v     Insert Word Art.

 

v     Insert a sound.

 

v     Add transition / effect to slide.

 

v     Save the presentation as a PPT file.

 

v     Save the presentation as a PPS file (show).

 

 

Assignments/Learning Activities: Students will work alone or in groups as they …

 

1.     select four aspects of themselves that they want to share with others.

Examples of aspects:

            Home, work, interests, play

            Hard worker, loyal friend, nature lover, athlete

            Mental, physical, emotional, spiritual

            Father, husband, employee, teammate

            Sister, daughter, friend, myself

 

2.     sketch out the layout for their slide presentations

3.     search through clipart and other image sources for pictures that reflect the aspects they want to include in their presentations

4.     develop the title page for their Power Point presentation.

5.     insert clipart or scanned images into Power Point Slides.

6.     insert text and animation to complete four slides.

7.     insert at least one sound file into their show

8.     develop a concluding slide.

9.     insert transitions

10.  save and present the slide show to the class.

 

Final Outcome: A six-page Power Point presentation to be presented to the class or group
